The film is called Am I Not Here? Directed by Mike HJ Chang, a visual artist currently based in Singapore, and Guan Rong, it is an autobiographical documentary film about Guan Rong’s life in the U.S. as an artist and as a person in general. 50 min.

There are two books which come together with the film as a book set. Copyright‐Free, Bonnie is a collection of self-selected notes, writings, short stories, homework, and letters from 1997 to 2008 by Guan Rong. 145 pages. A Picture Book contains a number of collections of small drawings Guan did between 1999 to 2005, notes from two very important and influential classes she took while in college, and some selected images from her appointment books from 2000 to 2009. 78 pages.

There are 300 copies of the book in total. A unique package was made for each of the first 100 editions. Every package and every DVD case is made and hand-drawn differently by Guan Rong.

This project started in 2008, and was created in celebration of Guan Rong living in the U.S. for 10 years. Without chronological order, the writings and drawings are very much in flux. Giving herself an image as a wild-child, the books and film shows the artist’s love for everyday life in general. The packages she created are visually interesting. With 100 of them altogether, there is a feeling of overwhelming, psychological twisted but curious and fanatical.

Guan Rong’s art is something that happens throughout the day. When she drives around the city or writes a letter to someone, art is born in her. Art comes as an inspiration and is the fruit of Guan’s search for a mindful living. Sometimes people need to relook at a piece of art they have created because it takes them back to a wonderful experience. So a piece of art is a flower Guan offers to the world, and at the same time, it is a “bell of mindfulness” for herself to remember the presence of beauty in her daily life.

After generations of peace and prosperity, war was inevitable. The clans each had their own vision, but even the most patient negotiator realized that only fangs and metal would prevail. Soon, even the gentlest beasts of the most complacent clans were plunged into battle. So it began. Welcome to the Fluff Wars.

"Fluff Wars: Prologue" is a multimedia narrative installation using video, puppets, drawings, and sound.

Zach Moser and Betsy Hunt currently reside and make art in the Midwest. Zach, an animator and prep cook, lives in Cedar Falls, IA while Betsy lives in Duluth, MN and teaches Digital Art at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The two artists crossed paths many years ago and had a few ideas in common. Years later they decided the time was right to put their distinct artistic differences aside and collaborate on the "Fluff Wars."

Leila Tschopp and Konrad Smolenski are currently in the International Artists in Residence program at 18th Street Art Center in Santa Monica. After seeing separate presentations by both artists at 18th Street, I felt that they could potentially benefit from another platform/venue, to present their work while they were still here, in the hopes of extending the dialogue to an additional group of peers and art enthusiasts who are unaware of their current presence in the city.

Less a formal show with some coherent direction or thematic approach than a rare opportunity to experience their work in our own backyard and within the (always) experimental confines of the Elephant space, “River” brings their two disparate practices together for one evening. They will both show new work that has been influenced by the geographic, architectonic, cultural, and social terrain of Los Angeles. This will be the first exhibition in the city for both artists.

Leila Tschopp (b.1978, Buenos Aires, Argentina) has had several solo exhibitions in Argentina in different national art centers and private galleries. She has been included in numerous group exhibitions in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and the United States. She is a recipient of the National Grant from the National Fund for the Arts and has been nominated for numerous national awards in Argentina. Her work is included in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rosario, Argentina, in the Goethe Institute in Lisbon, Portugal, and in private collections in Argentina and abroad. In 2010, she was selected by ACC Galerie and the City of Weimar for a Residency Program in Weimar, Germany and she participated in the Metropole Alliance Program at the Goethe Institute in Lisbon, Portugal. She will be included in a three-artist exhibition at ACC Galerie, Weimar, Germany and in La Maison de l’Argentine, Paris, France later this year. She lives and works in Buenos Aires.

Konrad Smolenski (b. 1977, Kalisz, Poland) has performed at many music and performance festivals and exhibited in galleries in Poland, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Hungary, France, Japan, Israel, and the United States. He has been a member of the bands: Mama, Sixa, Czykita, KOT, The New Worst Band, Kristen, and BNNT. He has participated in the actions of the art collectives Stado Prusa and the Helmut Kowalski Artistic Group and was a co-founder and member of the Penerstwo Art Group. He was also co-founder of the Start Gallery (2000-2002) and since 2003 he has been the coordinator of the so-called Pink Punk Scene (www.pinkpunk.pl). He is represented by Leto Gallery in Poland. Many American children and adolescents with artistic abilities are cajoled
by their peers to surrender artwork. In exchange for the gift of art, the
young artists get an ego-stroking: “Thanks!" the receiver will say, "I’m
going to keep this and when you’re famous I can sell it for a million
dollars.”

Very few American youths will earnestly pursue a career in art after high
school. Out of that reduced pool, almost nobody reaches any level of
"fame”. John P. Hogan would remind himself of these facts when he’d start
to feel down for disappointing his earliest investors. Alas, even this
modest comfort is undermined by the fact that he went to high school with
James Jean, who is totally a famous artist.

*James Jean is Famous (Not A James Jean Show)* is a tribute to John P.
Hogan’s inability to focus and commit to successful ideas, specifically in
the mediums of drawing and painting. All works will be by John P. Hogan,
and none by James Jean. There are bodies of work that never got off the
ground (like an abandoned Dora Marr tribute t-shirt design) and paintings on
paper about things that are irritating ("Parking Tickets"), and any number
of drawings involving text that give voice to the doubt and
passive-aggressive commentary that would otherwise be internalized ("Tell Me
What To Do and I'll Do It").

John P. Hogan is an L.A.-based artist who takes a satirical approach to issues of colonialism, oppression, and the malleability of history. His work incorporates the ethos and aesthetics of cartoons, illustration, rock music, and amateur theater production. He has exhibited work nationally and internationally, including at John Connelly Presents and the Yerba Buena Center, and has performed at venues such as the Mak Center, TELIC, and Fritz Haeg’s Sundown Salon, and Machine Project.

Thinking about the H.P. Lovecraft inspired movie, Re-animator, and the original use of Elephant Space as a doctor’s office, The Reanimation of Fabricated Nature looks at the reanimation and doctoring of natural objects. Five artists from across the United States (David Waddell and Laura Nicole Kante from Texas, Erin Diebboll and Einat Imber from New York City, and Los Angeles’ own Lorrie Waldie) create, craft, and find objects in nature and inject new life into them. The idea of reincarnating life, intertwined with a concern for environmentalism, is definitely a focus among these artists; what varies is how they approach this topic. Unifying them is a sense of keeping the object alive, no matter what. Animated stuffed animals, log bombs, mapping forests, plastic as landscape, wool spikes, wood signs, and viral geometry come together to present the viewer with a look at how artists use their skills of alchemy to create zombie forms.

David Waddell, originally trained as a painter, is a Houston based artist who uses video to comment on our daily way of life and how we as a culture view everything in a hybrid manner. He sees today’s video-making methods as very democratic, i.e. in one’s basement. His work animates common disposable items such as cardboard, lotion containers, Christmas lights, various papers, hot glue, plastic toys, styrofoam, twigs, batting, ironing boards, fake flowers, straws, etc. Waddell creates work, which seeks to be fluid and beautiful while capturing the magic of childhood and inanimate objects coming to life.

Einat Imber is a New York based artist whose work looks to “ the systematic order found in nature in contrast to the ambiguity of organic forms”. In her work, she strives to create a new order just as convincing as the logic found in nature. This symbiotic relationship between the inherent traits of materials and their configuration is central to her work.

Erin Diebboll is a New York based artist who documents her immediate environment in extreme detail. She tries to unlearn traditional drawing pedagogy techniques. Instead of drawing things the way she sees them, she draws them the way she has seen them, the way she knows them, in their most obvious form, as drawn “definitions.” In this manner, her work takes on the form of cataloging, employing the scientific method in a visual manner.

Laura Nicole Kante is a Dallas area based artist who weaves and crochets to create works which create metaphors and layered enigmatic meanings focusing on the dynamic between experience and emotional processing in a range of degrees and stages. Inspired by remodeled interiors, she uses weaving processes to create threatening environments.

Lorrie Waldie is a Los Angeles based artist who explores various natural phenomena through gravity and space. In her work, she grapples with the natural, attempting to methodically create constructions which end up being unstable. Waldie’s poetic work collaborates with nature, “if a piece of art falls in the woods, would you step on it?” Waldie’s work is an immediate reaction to the environment it occupies.

The Reanimation of Fabricated Nature is a group show which looks at how these artists infuse their work with a sense of play and interaction with the immediate environment using natural and found materials. In such situations, zombie-like creatures are created...

David Waddell works in Houston, Texas and is included in the upcoming Texas Biennial 2011. Waddell just finished residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts and at Lawndale Art Center. He has shown films in Chicago, San Francisco, Washington D.C., and New York. Einat Imber (born 1979, Israel) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Although her practice is based in an urban environment, it is closely related to nature. In 2008, a fellowship from the Joan Mitchell Foundation allowed her to spend 4 weeks as artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center. She returned to the city with a U-haul full of driftwood. Other materials for her work are sourced from hardware stores, the 99¢ store, bait and tackle shops, the fabric district or the McMaster catalogue. Her work has been included in numerous group shows in and around New York City. Most recently she presented a room full of sculptures, drawing and photography as part of the 2010 Governors Island Art Fair. Erin Diebboll was raised in rural MA and moved to New York City to pursue her undergraduate studies at Cooper Union. She now resides in Brooklyn, NY working primarily in drawing, printmaking and film. She has been granted residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and the Lower East Side Printshop and looks forward to participating in Swing Space, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Residency on Governor’s Island this summer. Laura Nicole Kante received her MFA in Fibers from the University of North Texas in 2010, and her BFA in Painting from the University of Houston in 2003. Diana-Sofia Estrada is a Los Angeles based artist. Guy Lafleur was born in a cheese cellar at Aix en Provence, France in 1953. He currently divides his time living and working between Maine and Bermuda. After serving in the French Foreign Legion in the early 1970’s, Lafleur attended the Sorbonne, followed by doctoral studies near the black forest region of Germany. While he spends most of his time on anthropological research and field studies, Lafleur is a prolific sculptor and draftsman. Over nearly three decades, he has amassed over 15,000 works that have never been shown publicly.

Bruce’s work often includes the use of textiles, performance and video to explore concepts of utopia, radical economies and time. She occupies the role of the artist as a position from which she generously offers service...s to various communities. Her services have ranged from free hair cuts, to mending clothes, to a handmade quilt to offer warmth. Bruce examines social constructs and their practical relationships to the art object, crossing the borders between the art and the public, and acting from a place of charity and possibility.

D’Amico’s practice, like Bruce, also breaks the wall between the public and the art. In her installations D’Amico invites the viewer to sit down, dance, touch, jump in, or enter at your own pace. Her work stems from a utopia that is born of feminist concerns, revealing the personal play of the artist and her materials, her pleasures, her confrontations and her environment constructed with the desire to shift your perspective and engage you.

In this collaborative exhibition, Bruce and D’Amico will be showcasing individual works along with a series of photographs documenting a collaborative performance that extends their approach to art as shared object, art as play thing, art in use. Both artists have studios in Los Angeles at the Elephant Art Space, a gallery and artist’s studio community.

Jennifer Bruce was born and raised in South Dakota and received her BFA in Art from California Institute for the arts in 2007. Her work has been shown at the Arkansas Center for the Arts, Liitle Rock Arkansas, Estación Tijuana, Tijuana, Mexico and the CalArts Library and galleries, and she has presented performance work at Sea & Space Explorations, LACMA and various public spaces in Los Angeles. Bianca D’Amico, a California native, received her BFA in Painting / New Genres from Otis College of Art and Design in 2005 and her MFA in Art from the California Institute of the Arts in 2007. Futures at Elephant was conceived as a response to the current vitality and diversity
of expression displayed by young artists from Northern Ireland today.
The exhibition includes seven artists, while showcasing video art, installation art,
photography, painting and printmaking.

Futures hopes to bring the practices of young artists in Northern Ireland to a new and
challenging setting, and aspires to observe an alteration in context through the work
reaching a new audience.

S A R A H C A M P B E L L
‘I am intrigued by the connection between the world and our existence. How did everything begin and where did it come from? Creation stories originate from numerous religious groups and tribes, which have been passed down through word of mouth and written text and all vary in content and detail.’
‘These stories do not make much sense and do not follow a logical order of events. By emphasising this sense of uncertainty and ambiguity, the nature of creation mythology is reflected. They highlight how people have come to terms with their own mortality, and how they can make sense of their existence.’

Like most 90’s kids I was raised on a healthy diet of sugary cereals and brightly coloured television shows, and although I’m 23 now my work still reflects this period of life through a vibrantly spray-painted nostalgic haze of pop-culture imagery. What I was blissfully unaware of at the time was that by sitting watching my cartoons after school I was exposing myself to a world of semiotic advertising and media. My practice now aims to mimic and in turn expose the devices of mass media and advertising by juxtaposing and subverting images of contemporary pop-culture to expose this socially accepted modern capitalist culture that society has created.

My practice generally involves a systematic approach based on a production workflow and tends to have a labour intensive, time consuming quality. This work takes a wide range of forms including drawing, sculpture, collage, acoustic installation, text and video.

The main areas in which I am interested are:
Order and sequence, written language, and the physicality of speech.

P H I L H E S S I O N
In the video work Storm Blew Up Phil Hession sings the Traditional Irish song Willy Taylor. The audience in the video is made up of Taiwanese indigenous artists who dismiss Hession’s attempt to teach them the song instead preferring to accompany him with improvised harmonies.
In A Tartan Elephant, Hession conducts an impromptu interview with Alexander on a Belfast street. The roles of Interviewer and interviewee become blurred as Alexander begins to take command of the conversation. Topics discussed range from shoe shops to Sigur Rós.

L I S A M A L O N E

Lisa Malone works at Flaxart studios, Belfast, exploring and experimenting with her practice. Malone's work is a gentle comment on human nature, suggestive rather than literal, and allows a multitude of readings. Using print, sculpture and kinetic elements.

In Onyx semtex kissesx it is the ambiguity of a moment, where the figures stay the same yet the cloud movement and the text changes, the picture can be read in many different ways. In an attempt to fragment an intense moment, the internal life of an individual and the varied ways people experience things.

C H R I S T O P H E R M C K I N N E Y

My interests have travelled from conventionally formed paintings to those which seem more comfortable obtaining a sculptural presence. The work is scripted with a theatrical narrative, something that isn’t entirely honest about what it’s not, an attempt to act as a stage prop for the imagination.
Currently I find myself observing notions and concepts of identity. Aspects of my subject matter are constructed around what were once frequent and familiar encounters from the past weather its imagery or aspects of an old interior. I’m interested in how objects are categorized, particularly in relation to their function or purpose, how an alteration of context distorts the reading of while developing an alternative understanding of the everyday, the common.

R Y A N M O F F E T T

My practice usually involves working on large-scale multi media installations that incorporate video and sound to explore cinematic perspective. The new work titled ‘The Drowning’ was created as a response to my time in Los Angeles. ‘The Drowning’ is constructed of a series of found photographic images that where selected for both their narrative value and their sense of place.

What progressive possibilities are available to figurative art now? Three pieces by three artists here articulate three theatrical modes of the figurative. In each case, the figurative gesture is not to demonstrate a human form in a frame, but rather, to activate the exterior space containing the work. By effectively turning the space into a theater, and surrounding works into co-stars, these works' primary commitment emerges as a collaborative teaching function, facing their public selves toward the whole of the room. Instead of stepping back from the social encounter, each work steps forward, constituting an argumentative, cacophonous public space.

Rebecca Kolsrud lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She received a B.S. in 2006 from New York University, and is a current MFA candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Anna Mayer lives and works in Los Angeles, where she got her MFA from CalArts in 2007. Moving between between collectivity and introspection, Mayer attempts to establish an “outcantatory” practice that uses language, fire, and intention to propose relationships encouraging embodiment and the rejection of discreet, linear modes of reception. In 2010 Mayer had a solo exhibition at Sea and Space Explorations in Los Angeles. Group exhibitions include Night Gallery (CA), Cerritos College Art Gallery (CA), A.I.R. Gallery (NY), Karen Lovegrove (CA), and Klaus Von Nichtssagend (NY). Mayer recently performed the first of her *WORD THE WORD* series of guided listening sessions at the Experimental Mediation Center of Los Angeles. www.annamayer.info

Andy Roche earned a BFA from the University of Iowa and a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. One strain of his work, as included in this show, pursues an aesthetics of radical witnessing informed by the politics and theology of Christian Anarchism. Cahill's photographs and Tilton's sculptures both explore what we mean by the word "natural" and what (human) nature is, using very different but complementary approaches.

Cahill's Sigma Nu photographs document the time she spent with the frat house of the title in their natural frat house environment, seemingly comfortable enough with Cahill to behave as if she wasn't there to record what transpired, while Tilton's Nature Viewing Platform gives viewers a chance to see the nature around them as well as be seen as an example of nature by other viewers.

Tommi Cahill earned her BFA from California Institute of the Arts and her MFA at Yale. Themes in her work range from gender and sexuality to perception. Currently she is working on a portrait series that provides an intimate look at background actors who are pursuing their dreams of cinematic acclaim in an unforgiving industry. Roger Tilton is a Los Angeles-born and -based artist currently living in the Inland Empire. His work encompasses installation, sculpture, performance and photography. He is a 2006 CalArts grad and has shown his work in group and solo shows both in Los Angeles and internationally including the Wignall Museum, the Outpost for Contemporary Art, and Blutenweiss (Berlin). The ties that binds these 5 Chicago artists together is the place in which they make work. The sculptural nature of their pieces, although two are photographers, play off of each other in this exhibition.

CANAL seeks to make exhibitions with a DIY approach to globalizing the art world.

These artists will be exhibiting in Los Angeles, a brand new territory for them, and the L.A. art community will be exposed to some of Chicago’s hottest young artists.
